Should the introduction or literature review be written in the present tense or past tense? How about the methods section? Past or present tense—which verb tense is better for a research paper? For the literature review, most academic editors recommend using the past simple or present perfect when talking about past research, and the present simple when referring to general truths. For the methodology and results sections, almost all academic writing resources agree that the past simple tense is the logical choice, as is the present simple tense for the conclusions.
Using tenses inconsistently or unnecessarily shifting tenses means sloppy writing—this is what any experienced editor would say, and then offer examples of how to avoid verb tense errors.
But not everyone learns academic writing from books or classes. Most grad students learn academic writing the same way they learned to speak: by imitation. I know I did! But this is not such a great idea, because not all published theses or research papers are well-written.
Unfortunately, style guides, academic writing books, and academic editors give conflicting advice.

Or follow the guidelines of the journal in which you want to publish. Also ask your advisors, but take their suggestions with a grain of salt if they give you advice that contradicts the school guidelines for thesis preparation or the style guide you must follow.
